The Rest are a seven-piece outfit coming to us from the lands of Ontario, Canada. They’re set to release their sophomore album, Everyone All At Once, on this Tuesday, July 22nd.
“Apples & Allergies”, the first single, is enjoyable enough. It reminds me a bit of Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s. There’s the sweeping vocals, lush instrumentation and a sense of subdued optimism. Nice for a quiet Sunday afternoon.
I’m not sure if these songs will be released as a 7″, but if they are, “Walk On Water” appears to be the B side. It’s actually my favorite of the two tracks. The increased urgency highlights the ensemble playing to a better degree than the more subdued A side.
I feel like The Rest has the possibility of being a great band, but they aren’t quite there yet. Perhaps if they were a little more concise; The middle sections seem like they’ve been spliced in from entirely different songs and appear without any warning or transition only to disappear in the same manner.
They’ve got a lot going for them, though, so I’ll be sure to check out the rest of the album when it comes out. For now, you can download their first album for free by visiting their website.
